Pompei, Italy, 8th June 2007

...Coming back from Sorreto and passing on Naples we couldn't help going to Pompeii, the city famous in the world as one of the richest of Roman Impire and which became famous in Russia due to the picture of Karl Brulov.
When I was a kid a reproduction of thas picture was hung on under my bed on the wall. Sometimes before sleeping I peered at distorted by horrow faces of dying people and tried to imaging this moment, but never could. And now I am walking down the lifeless streets of burned off for the face of earth by burning hot lava and almost feeling that there is a parallel life of the dead souls of its ex-citizens. Brrr! Depressive, terrifying and beautiful "dead" city...
Pompeii is a ruined Roman city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. It, along with Herculaneum, was destroyed, and completely buried, during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning 2 days on 24 August 79 AD.

The volcano collapsed higher roof-lines and buried Pompeii under many meters of ash, and it was lost for nearly 1600 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
